Ever since I've re-edited Shazzo's Super Mugen Bros. Mario (which is still called SMBZ Mario by people despite having NOTHING to do with SMBZ), obviously Luigi had to be re-edited as well. The first time I edited him was back in 2022 when I was still new at creating Mugen content, so it was handled in a mediocre way but as I got better at it, I improved him via updates. But I eventually decided to give him a re-edit for more polish.

1. CHANGELOG

-DXG's re-edit v1.4 (May 7, 2026)
 *[FIX] Plenty of animations had hurtboxes/hitboxes placed below the actual sprite, allowing for weird moments such as getting hit by anything below due to a hurtbox being below the main one.
 *[ADD] Character-specific intro against Super Mugen Bros. Mario.

 *[BUFF] When a parry occurs, a pause appears which gives a chance to use a move before the opponent can recover from the move they're using.

 *[CHANGE] Fireball and Luigi Cyclone in some ways:
  - FIREBALL: No longer bounces if it hits the ground, and instead travels in a straight line. It also moves a little slower.
  - LUIGI CYCLONE: Luigi now moves around if you press either left or right. He is fast in fact! Also, number of hits now varies depending on which button is pressed.
 *[ADD] Aerial drift; now Luigi can move in the air after jumping!
 *[BUFF] Luigi now can use crouching attacks while running.
 *[BUFF] Standing strong attack now makes Luigi move forward slightly.
 *[BUFF] Crouching attacks are now lows.
 *[CHANGE] Pausetime for medium standing and aerial normals, as well as for Super Jump Punch.
 *[ADD] Screenshake for stronger versions for Super Jump Punch.
 *[BUFF] A.I. again. And oh boy, try to get to him now when fighting against him. :D

   - Renamed to Ghost Summon
   - More fluid animation
   - Ghost now has an animation when it hits the opponent
   - Changed the input from D, DF, F, any kick to D, DB, B, any kick to make space for Thunderhand's new input
  - Thunderblast:
   - Renamed to Thunder Blast
   - Thunder became a separate helper projectile
   - Now causes hard knockdown
   - Now uses power when the superpause appears
   - Now attributed as a hyper instead of a special
   - Luigi is no longer affected by cornerpush during the move
   - Animation when the projectile hits the opponent is now smoother by lowering the pausetime
   - Now can be performed also when any punch is pressed.
   - Changed the directional input from D, DF, F to D, DF, F, D, DF, F.
   - No longer gives back power
   - Now causes an electric effect; if the opponent does not have an electrocuted animation, a PalFX is used instead.
  - Bro Blast:
   - Mario now says "Let's-a go!" when the superpause appears
   - Now uses power when the superpause appears
   - Projectile became a separate helper
   - Projectile hits more times
   - Animation when the projectile hits the opponent is now smoother by lowering the pausetime
   - Changed the input from D, DF, F, Y+Z to D, DB, B, D, DB, B, any punch to make space for Hammer Strike (also to be consistent with Thunder Blast's new input)
   - Luigi is no longer affected by cornerpush during the move
   - Now attributed as a hyper instead of a normal
   - No longer gives back power
   - A pause now appears when Mario falls down
   - For the move's endlag, Mario now becomes a separate helper when leaving. This also plays if Luigi is hit and the move is interrupted.
 *[ADD] EX specials.
 *[CHANGE] running animation.
 *[ADD] Animation when Luigi stops running.
 *[BUFF] Luigi's comboability has been heavily expanded - Luigi now can cancel his normals into specials or hypers (save for his crouching hard normal). Certain specials can be also chained into hypers!
 *[FIX/NERF/REMOVE] Infinite priorities on attacks that show Luigi attacking with his arms or legs.
 *[ADD] New sprites.
 *[CHANGE] Many animations were made more fluid and smooth.

2. GAMEPLAY

-MAIN GAMEPLAY-
Luigi is a character that mainly heavily relies on zoning with two of his projectiles, which his A.I. takes advantage of. Due to his lackluster running speed, Luigi will be likely using Luigi Cyclone to approach, or just wait until the opponent gets close to start comboing them. Other than that, when you're away, just use his projectiles to make sure the opponent might have a hard time approaching.

Some of his moves are encased in square brackets ([ ]) as seen in this readme. These mean that the button (mainly a directional input) must be held down for the move to be performed. All specials also come with an EX version, a stronger version that requires 500 power and gives some longer endlag, and EX moves require two buttons to be pressed.

-COMBOS-
Luigi mainly focuses on comboing normals into stronger normals into his melee specials, mainly Luigi Cyclone, and then into any of his hypers. It's slightly tricky to chain a normal into Luigi Cyclone because you're likely to move away a bit, but Luigi moves very fast, so if go forward during it before the opponent is out of hitstun, you can combo them. For a finisher, you can use any hyper if at enough power, or Super Jump Punch.

SPECIALS:

Fireball: D, DF, F, X/Y/Z
- A simple projectile where Luigi shoots a fireball that causes soft knockdown if the opponent is airborne. Can be used while airborne and projectile velocity varies depending on the button pressed.
 - EX version: Shoots two fireballs.

Thunderhand: D, DF, F, A/B/C
- Luigi hits the opponent with a thunderhand that comes from his hands. Causes an electric effect (which also results in hard knockdown) and is a decent combo tool.
 - EX version: More damage.

Super Jump Punch: F, D, DF, F, X/Y/Z
- Luigi performs an uppercut that causes hard knockdown. Vertical distance varies depending on the button pressed.
 - EX version: Longer distance.

Luigi Cyclone: D, DB, B, X/Y/Z
- Luigi spins several times, causing hard knockdown on the final hit. Great combo tool and he can move around during its duration, though he moves pretty fast.
 - EX version: Has more knockback.

Ghost Summon: D, DB, B, A/B/C
- Original description: A Luigi's Mansion ghost emerges from Luigi's Poltergust 3000 and attacks the opponent.
 - Additions: Velocity varies depending on the button pressed. EX version causes soft knockdown.

Green Missile: [B], F, X/Y/Z
- Luigi charges himself, before flying like a missile (duh). Velocity and knockdown vary depending on charge level. To charge, hold down the button you've pressed.
 - Least charged: No knockdown
 - Less charged: Soft knockdown
 - More charged: Hard knockdown
 - Fully charged: Wall bounce

Taunt: S
- Luigi does a bashful kick, which may appear harmless, but it deals 1/3 of damage, is unblockable, and causes hard knockdown. This attack cannot K.O. the opponent and is range is shorter, though, but can still dish out some nasty damage if it connects.

HYPERS:

Thunder Blast: D, DF, F, D, DF, F, X+Y/Y+Z/X+Z (uses 1000 power)
- Original description: Luigi charges his thunderhand and releases a blast of lightning.
 - Additions: Causes hard knockdown and is a great combo tool.

Hammer Strike: D, DF, F, D, DF, F, A+B/B+C/A+C (uses 1000 power)
- Luigi strikes the opponent with his hammer, causing a wall bounce. Good combo tool.

Bro Blast: D, DB, B, D, DB, B, X+Y/Y+Z/X+Z (uses 2000 power)
- Original description: Luigi summons Mario, and the two attack the opponent simltaneously with a large blast of thunderhand and firebrand.
 - Additions: Excellent combo tool and causes hard knockdown.

Thunder Wave: D, DB, B, D, DB, B, A+B/B+C/A+C (uses 3000 power)
- Luigi uses both of his fists to summon a wave of thunders. Can be used to help a teammate in simul matches if the opponents are constantly attacking them. Not recommended to use at the opposite corner as it'll hit less times.

3. PALETTES
Luigi has a total of 12 palettes, all of which can be selected if you press a different button when you're at the character select screen. Note that palettes 7-12 can only be selected if you hold start (which is used for the taunt). However, Luigi comes with a palette selector, which allows the player to select any of the 12 palettes, which can be helpful if they change their mind before the match can start. Below are the palettes:

A: Luigi (Default)
B: Pink
C: Cyan
X: Mario
Y: Original
Z: Fire
Start+A: Builder
Start+B: Reverse
Start+C: Waluigi
Start+X: 8-bit
Start+Y: Relek (from Tomato Adventure)
Start+Z: DeMille (also from Tomato Adventure)

4. NOTES

-THINGS YOU CAN DO WITH HIM-
 1. Make a match with him.
 2. Share it with your friends/fans in case you would want them to gain a potential interest in the Mario series, if they somehow didn't hear about it.
 3. Give him an A.I. patch if you want his A.I. to be stronger. No permission needed, though credit will be still appreciated. :)
 4. Create additional palettes for him, in case you would want more variety or have your own palettes.
 5. Send me feedback if there are any oddities, oopsies, or bugs, especially that can affect his gameplay.

-THINGS YOU CANNOT DO WITH HIM-
 1. Make NSFW/18+ edits (this includes vore edits).
 2. Bash him (it's a waste of time. There are better ways of using your time rather than bashing. This isn't the 2010s anymore anyways).
 3. Make spriteswaps or paletteswaps of him, because doing them is laziness and is disrespectful.

-THINGS THAT REQUIRE PERMISSION-
 1. As I tend to have trust issues with some Mugen content creators, editing him requires permission from me. Note that what can be edited are combos, gameplay, and other stuff, but absolutely no NSFW/18+ edits as mentioned earlier.
 2. Using codes from the character if you're creating a Mugen character yourself. It's better to learn how to code instead of steal, so if you would want to use some of his code, ask me first.
 3. Use of sprites in a different project.

-KNOWN ISSUES-
 1. The A.I. code is not perfect, but I tried.

-OTHER NOTES-
 1. This character was made only for Mugen 1.0 and up. Older versions of Mugen will not load the character.
 2. Tested on Mugen 1.1, but still works on Mugen 1.0.

5. INSTALLATION

Struggling with adding Luigi to your roster? No worries, here's how to do it:

1. Unpack the character's folder and add it in the chars folder
2. Go to data and open select
3. Paste the following name in the character section: LuigiSMB

And here you go! Luigi should now appear anytime you start Mugen.
